Kulturno dobro: Gradska (Jusuf) džamija

History

The city (Jusuf) mosque in Bijelo Polje, the only one in the city core, has been in its current location since 1741. It was transferred there from the village of Jabuchino, 5 km away from the city, so that it would not be left to perish after the withdrawal of the Turkish army. Stone by stone, on the hands of the locals, in a column ten kilometers long, it was transported, as legend says, in 48 hours.

Details about the cultural property

Although it has undergone numerous renovations and restorations that to some extent damaged its authentic appearance, due to its importance, the mosque was placed under the protection of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments. There are several graves in the courtyard of the mosque, including the grave of Imam Hafiz Mustafa Gušmirović, which is why this mosque is often called the Gušmir Mosque. In the courtyard of this mosque, there are offices of the Islamic community, school classrooms, ablutions and apartments for imams. The mosque had its own endowments: a field in Bijelo Polje, a school and three cemeteries. The last restoration was carried out in October 2001, i.e. in the month of Sha'ban 1422 of the Hijri year.
